Helping Hands trip to Mississippi

11 of us from my church joined up with others in our area and headed off to Long Beach, Mississippi to aid in Katrina relief. We left on Saturday, Oct 18 and came back on Sunday, Oct 26. We drove to Tennessee and stayed over night in host homes on the way down and back. The overall experience was amazing. There were 3 different sites we were assigned to. The site I was on got to totally start a house from nothing. When we rolled up to the site on Monday morning this is what it looked like.

We worked everyday from about 8am to 4pm. We would head back to the church, converted into our home for the week, and shower. Dinner was at 6 every night. We had the most amazing chef. His name is Bill and Fran from our church was his assistant. We would head off to bed anywhere between 9 to 11. We were down there for the first part of the World Series, and there were a lot of Phillies fans, so that made for some late nights. Plus, it was fun just to hang out and talk and play cards. So, the pics below are of our showers (which we went outside to use), common area/kitchen/dining area, and our bedroom.

On Friday we only worked half a day. This allows us the opportunity to sight see, if we wanted to. So a group of us headed to New Orleans for the afternoon and dinner. I wish I could have taken pictures of what we saw heading into the city of New Orleans. The famous New Orleans was great. The outskirts still showed the path of destruction of Katrina. There were buildings falling apart, buildings with tress and shrubs growing inside and out of them, and there were buildings standing with massive holes in them. I could not believe this is 3 years later! So, I did not get those photos, but here are some from the city of New Orleans, including a group picture of everyone in my church group and a couple of strays that came with us. :)

Long Beach, where we stayed there was still some proof of Katrina as well. The following pics are taken within walking distance of where we were staying. One is a store that has not been touched since Katrina. I guess is was just easier to walk away. The other is house down the street that was re-built, but as you can see not in the same way the original probably was. The last one is on the beach looking toward town. The wood sticking out of the sand is part of what is left of the boardwalk that use to line the beach.

I would highly recommend to anyone who may have the opportunity to help with relief and rebuilding along the Gulf of Mexico to jump on the chance. I look forward to going down there again next year. The family we helped was so grateful. The story of the woman another group was helping was about as bad as bad could be. There is so much to be done. Only about 35% of the Gulf Coast has been rebuilt. The stories I heard of people I encountered at the local grocery store were simply unbelievable. Also, I learned the organization to donate to is American Red Cross. They are still helping support Katrina relief with inflow of money for construction.

Below are a couple of random pics from the job site and other great memories for me. The last pic is what our site looked like when we left on Friday.
