Opportunity of A Lifetime!

January 16, 2009

To All Who May Be Interested,

My name is Stefanie Abreu and I am writing to ask for your assistance in an amazing opportunity. A year ago I started attending a new faith community known as The Barn. The first gathering that I attended I heard about a group of Barners leaving for Honduras to help the students at a school in La Entrada. I remember thinking “I am so doing that next year!” So here it is a year later and I am planning a trip to La Entrada, Honduras in April 2009. There are 6 of us from The Barn going and a group from our partner community, Liberty Corner Presbyterian Church. LCPC began working with the poorest of the poor in La Entrada over 10 years ago. The outcome of their love and support is the Hearts for Honduras school, which educates street kids with no other opportunity for an education.

I will be working with the 150+ students in grades 1-6, their families, and the whole town. There are many opportunities for me to get involved, such as a vision clinic, dental clinic, medical clinic, helping in the classrooms, and further construction of the school. I am excited to grow and learn. I have heard all kinds of wonderful experiences from some of those who have been on past trips to La Entrada. I have no doubt that I will see the face of God. I am sure my eyes will be opened and I will be even more aware of the true comforts I enjoy in life. (I have been told I will be very thankful for warm showers and clean water when the faucet is turned on.)

I ask you to partner with me in this opportunity. I have the great challenge of raising the money for my trip, which is $1700. This money pays for airfare, hotel, food, and supplies for the school. So, I invite you to consider supporting me and the children of La Entrada. Any gift is helpful and appreciated, and all donations are tax-deductible as allowed by law. Checks should be made payable to “The Barn” with my name in the memo line and sent to me by the end of February. For more info on The Barn go to http://www.thebarnlv.org/ and for info on Hearts for Honduras go to www.libertycorner.org/home/howwehelp/globalmissions/honduras/h/. If you are unable to support me financially perhaps you know someone who is. Please pass this on to them. Also, I invite you to support me in your prayers. Prayers for safe travel, sustained good health, language barriers not be too difficult, and ways I can contribute to, grow from, and adjust to a culture vastly different than I am accustomed to.

I hope you will consider supporting me on this life changing opportunity to La Entrada, Honduras.

Many thanks in advance.
Stefanie

Poor Millie - I think she only has 8 lives left now!

So, Saturday Dec. 27, I accidentally closed Millie's tail in the door. I stepped over her to go into the bathroom and shut the door behind me. Her tail got stuck in the hinge and it must have pinched, because when I opened the door she was gone. (Normally she lays in front of the door till we go into another room.) So I picked up the patch of hair that was in the door and something was different this time. (Since she is long hair we step on her tail quite often and pull a little hair out.) It was hard in the center. I looked at it and noticed it was hollow. At this point I start freaking out. Curtis calmly tells me to go get Millie. He examines her tail and there is about 1/4 inch of her bloody tail bone. At this point I am balling. We take her to the animal hospital, cuz all the vets have closed about 30 minutes ago. The vet tells us she has to have surgery to amputate part of her tail. Now the guilt has totally consumed me. She went thru the surgery fine. She is not too happy about the collar. She keeps trying to play with the shaved part of her tail. You can almost see her thought process...."it looks like a toy, but if I go to play with it, I get yelled out, but when I run it follows me." Over a week later, I am starting to see the humor in it. It took a while though. Curtis was calm through the whole ordeal. When we were sitting on the bench in the waiting room, he said to me, "What's it going to be like when we have REAL kids?!"
